Hypnotherapy FAQ

Are Hypnotherapists licensed Doctors?
No. Hypnotherapists are Certified Counselors who specialize in generalized self-improvement therapy with behavior modification. In this particular profession, there is no licensing. A Hypnotherapist cannot refer to him/herself as a Doctor or Ph.D., without possessing the legitimate required credentials.
What does Hypnosis feel like?
It is important to understand that hypnosis is an extremely natural, regularly occurring mental state. When you “zone out” to a favorite song while driving, only to realize you’ve traveled for some distance completely unaware, is a form of hypnotic state.

Some patients don’t feel as though anything has transpired at the conclusion of the session, while others experience noticeable physiological changes. Usually, those immersed in this state will experience a deeper breathing rhythm, with heightened senses and a cool or tingling body sensation. The conclusion of the session should provide an overall sense of well-being and comfort.

I’m worried I won’t have any control over what I say or do, even after the session ends
This is a very common question and one we receive often! No patient can be hypnotized by someone else. Rather, a patient accepts the guidance and support offered and provided by the Hypnotherapist, in order to achieve a hypnotic state on his/her own. The patient’s mind remains in control – at all times – and will reject and block all suggestions that are not agreeable with it.

Therefore, if your partner wants you to quit smoking, the suggestion will not work if you aren’t agreeable to it. Your mind will simply reject and block the suggestion because it must be your choice. So the key word here is agreeable. The purpose of achieving the hypnotic state is to create an agreeable environment and mental state that will encourage and allow the shifting of perspective within the mind + body state.

I tried hypnotherapy before, and it didn’t work for me. Should I bother trying again?
While we can’t make generalizations or assumptions about the education and training of the Hypnotherapist you worked with, we can say that the proper education and training is vital to a successful session outcome. It is important the Hypnotherapist fully inform the patient of what to expect, with no question left unanswered. The more comfortable a patient is with the Hypnotherapist and the process, the more likely the desired results will be achieved. We invite you to meet with a qualified and educated Healing House practitioner, so we can work together to identify and achieve the desired results of Hypnotherapy.
How many sessions will it take to reach my goal?
There is no hard and fast rule for the number of sessions needed to reach specific goals and maintain the desired outcomes. What we can say is that your level of receptiveness to Hypnotherapy, coupled with the will-power of your conscious mind, will decide the length of time required in Hypnotherapy sessions.

As a general rule, Healing House recommends that new patients schedule a minimum of 12 sessions to start, scheduled one week apart. Many choose to continue Hypnotherapy treatment as a means to keep the mind + body alignment at maximum effect and efficiency.

During the session, will I be asleep?
While the word “hypnosis” means “sleep-like state” in its Greek form, you won’t be sleeping or unconscious at any time before, during, or after the session. You will be aware of all that is happening at all times but may experience different levels of “dreamy” relaxation that is dependent on the state and depth of relaxation.
After the session, will I remember everything that happened?
Typically, the majority of patients do remember – at a minimum – bits and pieces about the experience, with many remembering all of it. Often, given suggestions will randomly resurface during your daily conscious state. It’s a lot like eating dinner, and suddenly remembering a dream you had the night before. It’s at these times when these suggestions surface, that will help to produce the desired behavioral, sensory, or mental changes that are wanted.
